The West African state of Guinea-Bissau has renamed a sports stadium in its second city Bafata “Pele Stadium” in honour of the late Brazilian football legend.

The stadium naming decision was made at a cabinet meeting after observing a minute’s silence in memory of Pele, who died on December 29 at age 82. The proposal of FIFA president Gianni Infantino about Brazil’s football great Late Edison Arantes Do Nascimento aka Pele has continued to gain recognition.

Guinea-Bissau becomes the second country to rename a stadium after Pele. Cape Verde was the first, renaming their National Stadium after the legend.

Pele is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country, and was named Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000.
