The Caribbean Community, simply known as CARICOM is composed of twenty member States and five associate members. All together, 16 million citizens call it home.
CARICOM’s principle office is located in Turkeyen Georgetown, Guyana.
15 member states are independent countries or islands whereas the 5 associate members are British governed territories which are – Anguilla, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, and Turks and Caicos.
CARICOM four major goals are: economic integration; foreign policy coordination; human and social development; and security.
These four goals are the driving force on achieving high standards of living for their citizens as these countries engage in economic activities within and without the region.
It is in line with the mission to improve the quality of life for all CARICOM’s residents, that Guyana’s president Mohamed Irfaan Ali made the case on national television and the UN general assembly recently. (VIDEO attached)
CARICOM has developed a 10 point plan for reparatory justice that it seeks to get from European governments which were the exploiters and benefactors of the grand pillage that ensued the region for hundreds of years.
The 10 point plan for reparatory justice are –
(1) A Full formal apology (2) Reparations (3) Indigenous people development program (4) Development of cultural institutions (5) Public health care (6) Illiteracy eradication (7) Establish an African knowledge – these cultural hubs are to help reconnect with their roots (8) Psychological rehabilitation (9) Right to development via technology (10) Debt cancelation and monetary compensation
