The devastating news of Kelvin Kiptum’s tragic demise in a car crash, along with his coach Gervais Hakizimana, has left his family shattered.
The accident occurred near Kaptagat in western Kenya, a region renowned for training elite distance runners. Kiptum’s father, Samson Cheruiyot, a farmer, expressed the profound loss, as Kiptum, his only child, had ambitious plans to provide for his family through his running success.
In an emotional interview with Citizen TV, Cheruiyot revealed the poignant details of his last conversation with Kiptum. The young marathoner had promised to build his father a house and buy him a car through his running achievements.
Cheruiyot recalled the challenges his wife faced during Kiptum’s birth, leading to doctors advising against further pregnancies. Kiptum’s dedication to running was evident in his decision to forgo pursuing studies in electrical engineering, choosing instead to focus on his passion.
“He said that he had enough of electrical wiring, and that if he continued running, he would uplift us,” shared Cheruiyot. “I accepted and went to book for him a room near the training camp where he stayed until he won his first major marathon.”
Kiptum’s wife, Asenath Cheruiyot, mourned the loss of her husband and recounted their plans to travel together to Rotterdam in April, where he aimed to complete the marathon in under two hours.
She highlighted Kiptum’s commitment to supporting her business ventures and his deep love for their children. Despite concerns about his intense workout regimen, Asenath cherished the moments spent with her late husband.
Kelvin Kiptum had quickly risen as one of the most promising talents in road running, breaking the world record in only his third appearance in an elite marathon.
His remarkable achievement at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, where he set the record, was officially ratified by World Athletics just a week before the tragic accident.
In addition to the family’s grief, the global running community has also mourned the loss of a remarkable athlete with immense potential. Kiptum’s untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life, leaving a void in the hearts of those who admired his extraordinary talent and determination.
