The All Progressives Congress (APC) of Nigeria chose former Lagos State, the country’s commercial center, Bola Tinubu as its presidential candidate in the February 2023 elections.

President Muhammadu Buhari will leave office next year after ruling Africa’s most populous country and top oil exporter for the maximum eight years permitted by the constitution.

Tinubu, 70, who led Nigeria’s commercial capital from 1999 to 2007, defeated 13 other candidates in the APC primaries, including Buhari’s deputy, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Tinubu, a deft political operator, amassed a sizable following during his eight years as governor of Lagos. He has remained immensely influential since stepping down, with many of his faithful proteges holding key positions in government and industry.

His supporters see him as an excellent administrator with a talent for selecting bright, devoted technocrats to complete tasks.
