Senegal’s presidential election is witnessing a potential seismic shift as anti-establishment candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye surges ahead, challenging the status quo. Early results indicate Faye’s lead, prompting some rivals to concede defeat, although Amadou Ba, representing the ruling administration, anticipates a runoff.
Faye’s platform advocates for radical change, proposing Senegal’s departure from the CFA franc, a currency criticized as a vestige of colonialism. Additionally, he pledges to renegotiate substantial mining, gas, and oil contracts signed with foreign companies, challenging entrenched economic structures.
In contrast, Ba embodies the current administration led by President Macky Sall, whose tenure has faced criticism for failing to address economic hardship effectively.
Senegal grapples with high poverty rates, with the UN World Food Programme reporting that 39% of the population lives in poverty. Sall’s decision to abruptly cancel elections further fueled public frustration, leading to widespread protests and highlighting the desire for change among Senegalese citizens.
“The population is choosing between continuation and rupture,” remarked Faye after casting his vote, encapsulating the dichotomy facing voters.
The scene at Faye’s campaign headquarters in Dakar, where jubilant supporters gathered, highlighted the anticipation for change. Despite facing recent imprisonment, Faye’s release and subsequent surge in popularity signal a groundswell of support, particularly among Senegal’s youth demographic.
Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, has a significant following among Senegal’s youth, with more than half of the population under the age of 25. Sonko’s disqualification from the election further galvanized discontent, as many shared concerns over unemployment and poverty, viewing the current administration as unable to address these pressing issues effectively.
Official election results are pending, with Faye leading but requiring an absolute majority to secure victory outright and avoid a runoff. Early results from individual polling stations show Faye in a commanding position, fueling optimism among his supporters.
