South Africa has stated that it will continue to work with BRICS, a formidable economic bloc comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and established to promote member states’ common interests in areas such as security, trade, investment, and infrastructure, among others.

The clarification comes as pressure mounts for a withdrawal in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sadick Jaffer, the Department of Trade and Industry’s current Chief Director, revealed the country’s position.

“BRICS has a subcommittee and is made up of various subcommittees that meet and collaborate on trade and investments.”

“Once we assume the chairmanship, we become the driving force behind those processes,” he explained.

Work on the BRICS has not stopped,” he added, “and we work together to continue to identify opportunities for trade and investment.”

“And we also work to ensure that the ease of doing business between the countries is rebaited and made easier to do business, and we keep the relations going because trade and investment flows are long-term processes.”

According to the bloc’s rotating chairmanship rule, South Africa will soon take over the organization’s affairs after China, which currently chairs the group.
