Drug regulators in Tanzania, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe have initiated a recall of a batch of Johnson & Johnson children’s cough syrup as a precautionary measure following reports from their Nigerian counterpart regarding high levels of toxicity.

The recalled syrup, utilized to treat coughs, hay fever, and other allergic reactions in children, has also been subject to recall in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. South Africa has additionally recalled another batch of the syrup.

Laboratory tests conducted by Nigeria’s health regulator revealed elevated levels of diethylene glycol in the syrup. This compound has been associated with the deaths of numerous children in Gambia, Uzbekistan, and Cameroon since 2022, constituting one of the most severe instances of poisoning from oral medication globally.

Diethylene glycol is known to cause toxicity in humans upon ingestion, potentially leading to acute kidney failure.

The recalled batch of Benylin Paediatric syrup was manufactured by J&J in South Africa in May 2021. However, Kenvue now owns the brand following a spin-off from J&J last year.

Tanzania’s Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) commenced the recall process on April 12 after being informed of the Nigerian test results. TMDA spokesperson Gaudensia Simwanza stated that the exercise involves monitoring to ensure the removal of affected drugs from the market, rather than an investigation.

Kenya’s drug regulator spokesperson indicated that test results on the syrup are anticipated by Wednesday.

Although Rwanda’s Food and Drugs Authority did not report any adverse events from the syrup, it issued a recall as a precautionary measure.

Zimbabwe’s Medicines Control Agency expressed concern about the potential illegal entry of the syrup into the local market and pledged to enhance inspections accordingly.

Kenvue stated that it is conducting its own assessment and collaborating with health authorities to determine the appropriate course of action.

At the moment, investigations are ongoing to ascertain the extent of the issue and to prevent any further distribution of the potentially harmful syrup. Kenvue has emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety of consumers and is cooperating closely with regulatory agencies to address the situation swiftly and effectively.

Meanwhile, consumers are advised to refrain from using the recalled product and to follow guidance from local health authorities regarding any necessary steps to take.
