Less than two weeks after Elon Musk became CEO of Twitter, there are already worries that the business is deciding to overlook significant dangers in its most important foreign growth regions.

Reports of a major staff layoff at its only African location in Accra, Ghana’s capital city, surfaced on Friday, November 4. Since Twitter announced that Ghana will be the site of its first African headquarters in April 2021, employees at that location have been working remotely until last week.

After the employment layoffs, which also reportedly affected the company’s India branch, only one employee seems to have been kept at the Ghana office. With much excitement, the business launched an office in Ghana last year, claiming that it intended to be more “immersed” in African debates.

According to reports, after being denied access to work emails, the Ghanaian personnel reportedly sent messages regarding the expiration of their contracts to their personal accounts.

This sudden action by twitter to terminate employees is in violation of local labor rules, which mandate that companies provide workers at least three months’ notice before the contract’s termination date.

The unnamed staff employees said they had not received redundancy compensation, which is illegal in Ghana; nonetheless, they would still earn their regular salaries. Twitter was having a difficult time in both India and Africa prior to the layoffs.
