A day after his father, President Yoweri Museveni, ordered that he cease tweeting about official matters, the general of Uganda said, “no one will ban him from anything.”
The president’s action came after Gen. Kainerugaba’s controversial statements from a fortnight earlier, in which he threatened to invade Kenya, sparking public apologies and diplomatic gatherings to reaffirm relations.
The general will refrain from “talking about other nations and partisan politics of Uganda” on Twitter, the president announced on Monday. Hours later, in response, Gen. Kainerugaba questioned whether such a prank was “some kind of joke.”
Gen. Kainerugaba is well-known for his contentious tweets, which have included endorsements of both the rebels in Tigray who are battling the Ethiopian government and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
