A famed, much-loved lioness at Kenya’s Maasai Mara game reserve, fondly nicknamed Queen of the Mara Triangle, has passed away.

The big cat was also dubbed Mama Kali – Swahili for “fierce mother”.

During her death, she was believed to be about 10 years old and she spearheaded the Angama pride which lived in the larger Mara conservancy.

According to local media reports, lioness Mama Kali died last week in an alleged human-wildlife conflict.

In 2020, researchers from the Mara Predator Programme collared the Queen of Mara so she could be easily tracked and monitored.

According to a recent wildlife census, Kenya’s population of lions stands at 2,589.

Currently, wildlife enthusiasts are paying their tributes to the lioness:

In a blog post Adam Bannister, a filmmaker and photographer who captured Mama Kali in all her glory at the Maasai Mara, said “even without a name attached, her reputation swept across the golden grasslands”.

In 2021, a celebrated lion called Scarface also died at the game reserve.
