Authorities in Haiti have extended the curfew in Ouest, one of its ten departments until March 23, citing ongoing gang violence that has plagued the region. The escalating unrest, particularly in the south-central department housing the capital city’s jurisdictional seat, Port-au-Prince, has severely disrupted daily life.
The violence has given rise to numerous casualties and forced thousands to flee their homes in search of safety. Many displaced individuals have sought refuge in public schools and makeshift shelters, while essential services, such as hospitals, struggle to operate effectively due to staff shortages.
China Global Television Network (CGTN) reporter Wilner Bossou described the dire situation, noting the empty state of the main hospital in Port-au-Prince and the challenges faced by patients in accessing medical care.
“The hospital is like empty. There are no nurses, there are no doctors to take care of patients and the patients don’t go to the main hospital of Port-au-Prince to look for care,” the reporter said.
The deepening political crisis was further exacerbated tensions, with armed gangs demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister. Attacks on public institutions, including police stations and the international airport, have intensified, leading to a state of emergency and curfew enforcement.
Fuel supplies have been disrupted by armed groups, hindering access to the strategic Varreux fuel terminal and causing shortages at gas stations. Bossou highlighted the widespread impact of the gas shortage, with residents resorting to stockpiling fuel in cans to cope with the crisis.
Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, Haiti has faced increasing lawlessness, with gangs and criminal groups gaining control. Despite promises of political transition, the failure to hold elections has fueled social unrest and further destabilized the country.
Amidst these challenges, the Haitian government continues to grapple with the complex task of restoring order and addressing the root causes of the violence.
The extension of the curfew reflects the ongoing efforts to contain the situation and restore peace and stability to the region. However, the road ahead remains fraught with challenges as Haiti navigates through this turbulent period in its history.
