A leading Kenyan private hospital in the capital, Nairobi, has performed a penile implant procedure on a man suffering from erectile dysfunction or impotence.

According to the Aga Khan University Hospital, this was the first time such an operation had been executed in East and central Africa.

The procedure involves implanting a prosthesis device in the penis.

“The advantage of this surgery is that the man can have intercourse anytime they like without using medication,” the lead surgeon, Dr Ahmed Yousef, said.

Following this, men battling erectile dysfunction can now breathe a sigh of relief as the procedure was carried out on a 44-year-old man who had been suffering from erectile dysfunction for a string of years.

“It is a very nice and short procedure. It was around one hour, and then he had a good erection,” Dr Yousef told a leading Kenyan TV station.

Yousef also noted that the tests conducted on the patient, including a penile doppler ultrasound, showed that he had been struggling with a “severe venous leakage” and that is why an implant was the ideal treatment for him.

“Through this procedure his erectile dysfunction condition has been treated. If he had an issue with premature ejaculation, it will also be treated by this procedure,” he said

According to experts, erectile dysfunction or impotence is a taboo subject among many men despite being a common problem in East and Central Africa.

In Kenya alone, about 15-20 percent of men suffer from erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation and many of them suffer in silence due to the nature of the problem.

The procedure costs about Ksh 800,000 ($7,041) to Ksh1 million ($8,801).
