Kenyan police on Thursday night confirmed that nine people died after a crane collapsed at a construction site in the capital.

The crane tower was left erected alone after the jib crashed to the ground.

A police officer, Muturi Mbogo indicated that the crane caved in on Thursday at noon as workers were dismantling it. One worker was seriously wounded and the collapse is under investigation.

Michael Odhiambo, a worker who was on the site said the crane fell to the ground after its work was done on the 14th floor.

“It seems they did not realize the nuts tying it were loose,” he said of fellow workers. “We heard a loud bang, only to realize the crane was down.”

With the building of the 14-story student hostel being supervised by a Chinese construction firm, two Chinese engineers on board were also among the victims.

Speaking to AP, Plumber Dominic Morara said that he witnessed workers fall to the ground from the crane and that those on the ground also fled the vicinity.
