Russian President Vladimir Putin has responded to French President Emmanuel Macron’s concerns regarding Russia’s growing influence in Africa, acknowledging what he described as an “emotional reaction” from Macron.
In an interview on Wednesday, Putin highlighted the transparency of their direct discussions on the matter, indicating that they had openly addressed the topic.
Contrary to insinuations of Russia displacing France in Africa, Putin clarified that Russia’s engagement in the continent did not entail a deliberate effort to undermine French interests. Instead, he attributed Macron’s apprehensions, in part, to the presence of the Russian organization Wagner. Putin emphasized that Russia’s activities in Africa were not aimed at provoking or antagonizing France.
Putin also underscored the need for self-reflection, suggesting that Macron’s pronounced reaction might be influenced by internal dynamics within certain African states. He implied that France’s concerns could be exacerbated by developments in those nations, prompting a heightened response.
Regarding accusations of Russia encroaching on French turf in Africa, Putin maintained that Russia’s actions were not driven by a desire to assert dominance over France. He emphasized the importance of understanding the broader context and dynamics at play in Africa, suggesting that Macron’s concerns might be reflective of broader geopolitical shifts in the region.
Furthermore, Putin dismissed notions of Russia deliberately antagonizing France, stating that such interpretations were misguided. He reiterated Russia’s commitment to fostering constructive dialogue and cooperation with France and other international partners.
