Niger’s military council, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, seized power after ousting President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023. This junta has made notable geopolitical shifts, expelling French troops and terminating security agreements with the European Union.
Such actions have raised concerns among Western allies, fearing Niger might evolve into a strategic foothold for Russia in the region.
Notably, Niger’s junta-appointed Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine has also embarked on a visit to Moscow. During this visit, discussions are expected to encompass the broadening of partnerships with Russia, spanning defense, agriculture, and energy sectors.
Niger’s strategic significance is underscored by its uranium and oil reserves, along with its crucial role in combating Islamist militants in the Sahel region.
The economic and strategic importance of Niger extends beyond its borders, capturing the attention of global players such as the United States, Europe, China, and now Russia.

With its uranium resources vital for nuclear energy and oil reserves of interest, Niger becomes a focal point in the geopolitical chessboard. The junta’s decisions to eject French troops and pivot away from EU security pacts marked a notable geopolitical realignment, potentially reshaping alliances in the region.
As Russia increases its influence in Africa, particularly through military cooperation agreements, the evolving situation in Niger adds a new dimension to the geopolitical landscape.
The concerns of Western allies about Russia establishing a foothold in Niger emphasize the geopolitical implications of this evolving partnership.
