A Catholic priest was charged with raping and sexually abusing more than ten minors on Monday before the Resident Magistrate’s Court in Moshi. Police have been holding him since September 20th this year.
He was charged with providing Tsh3,000 ($1.29) and Tsh5,000 ($2.14) to students in Standard Six and Form One, respectively, in exchange for sexual favors. The kids had been going for First Holy Communion and Confirmation lessons.
Nurdin Babu, the regional commissioner, described the act as “disgraceful.”
Prior to the priest’s arrest, parents planned to demonstrate outside Kassim Majaliwa’s office after learning that the priest had molested many students. According to reliable sources, the parents had informed the police and Moshi’s Catholic Church hierarchy about the claims against the priest.
