The United States reiterated its call on Monday for Rwanda to take action against the perpetrators of an attack in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), standing firm on accusations of Rwandan involvement in its neighbor’s affairs.

The State Department, in a statement, accused Rwandan forces of collaborating with M23 rebels in an assault on a camp for internally displaced people near the eastern city of Goma, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals.

Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo dismissed the U.S. accusation as “ridiculous,” asserting that Rwanda’s “professional army” would never target a camp for displaced people. Despite this rebuttal, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller reaffirmed the U.S. stance, stating, “We absolutely do” stand by the claim.

Miller emphasized the need for Rwanda to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. The United States has long supported Kinshasa’s allegations of Rwandan support for the M23 rebels, predominantly composed of ethnic Tutsis, who renewed their armed campaign in the DRC in 2021.

However, the recent U.S. statement represents a significant escalation in accusing Rwanda of direct involvement in the conflict. Rwandan President Paul Kagame has countered by urging the DRC to take action against Hutu forces allegedly linked to perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, primarily targeting Tutsis.

The United States has actively sought to mediate between Rwanda and the DRC, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken engaging with President Kagame in January. Blinken expressed optimism about Rwanda’s willingness to engage in diplomatic efforts to address regional tensions.

This situation highlights the issues involved in the Great Lakes region of Africa, where historical grievances, ethnic tensions, and geopolitical interests intersect. The United States’ involvement reflects its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region, but challenges persist in finding sustainable solutions to longstanding conflicts.

As tensions persist between Rwanda and the DRC, the international community closely monitors developments in the region, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation to achieve lasting peace and stability. Efforts to address the root causes of conflict, promote reconciliation, and foster economic development remain essential components of a comprehensive approach to resolving the crisis.
