The United Nations General Assembly has marked a significant milestone by declaring May 25th of every year, a World Football Day, allowing enthusiasts worldwide to celebrate the beloved sport. This commemoration stems from the historic first international soccer tournament, held exactly a century ago during the 1924 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

“The declaration of World Football Day represents a momentous occasion for football fans around the globe,” remarked Libya’s U.N. Ambassador Taher El-Sonni, who spearheaded the resolution. “Football transcends boundaries, serving as a universal language that unites people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.”

The resolution, adopted by the 193-member General Assembly with resounding support and applause, illuminates the profound impact of football beyond mere recreation.

Football is more than just a game—it’s a catalyst for cooperation, peace, and diplomacy,” emphasized El-Sonni. “Its unparalleled reach fosters dialogue and understanding, bridging divides and promoting mutual respect.”

Acknowledging football’s significant role in various spheres, including commerce and cultural exchange, the resolution pays tribute to FIFA, the international governing body of soccer. “FIFA’s leadership and the dedication of regional and national soccer federations are instrumental in promoting the sport’s values worldwide,” noted El-Sonni.

Moreover, the resolution urges countries worldwide to leverage football and other sports as catalysts for peace, development, and gender equality. “Football has the power to inspire positive change and empower individuals, particularly women and girls,” stated El-Sonni.

“By harnessing the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play, we can advance social inclusion and build more resilient communities.”

In response to the declaration, football federations, organizations, and enthusiasts worldwide expressed enthusiasm and support for World Football Day. “This historic moment celebrates the enduring legacy of football and its ability to bring people together,” remarked Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA.

“Football transcends borders and languages, uniting millions of fans in a shared passion for the beautiful game.”

As nations prepare to observe World Football Day, plans are underway for a series of educational and public engagement initiatives. “This observance is not just about celebrating football—it’s about harnessing its potential to create positive change,” emphasized El-Sonni.

“Through community outreach programs, youth initiatives, and grassroots efforts, we can harness the transformative power of football to promote peace, inclusion, and sustainable development worldwide.”
