Two late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho secured their 2- 0 win against Villarreal, in Michael carrick’s first game as a caretaker manager, that confirmed their proceeding to the last 16 of the champions league.

Carrick made four changes to the squad from the previous manager Ole’s first 11 with Bruno Fernandes not starting.

The home side created better chances at goal that were kept at bay by United’s goalkeeper David De Gea’s fine saves. He made two fine saves against Manu Trigueros’ spirited efforts at goal.

Villareal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli’s poor pass to Capoue was intercepted by Fred who passed to Ronaldo with the forward cheekily lofting the ball over Rulli to give united the lead in the 78th minute.

Sancho’s injury time strike past the host’s goalkeeper sealed the visitors’ victory, securing their qualification for the knockout stages with a game to spare.
