KENYA WOMEN RUGBY STAR PHILADELPHIA OLANDO APPOINTED UAE COACH

Former Kenya Lioness player Philadelphia Olando has been appointed head coach of United Arab Emirates (UAE) women’s rugby team.

UAE is trying to grow the sport amongst ladies in the Western Asia country and believes Olando’s international reputation and experience will be an added advantage.

In a statement, Emirates Rugby Federation, expressed happiness for signing the Kenyan coach, and the federation’s intention to participate in the upcoming continental and Arab competitions.

It further indicated that the development will significantly expand the spread of rugby among girls, noting that the federation always seeks to attract distinguished officials from the game to add the element of expertise to the players and to achieve the goal of championships and titles at the Arab and continental levels.

For her part, Olando confirmed that the federation has handed her a great responsibility, something she is happy about. She vowed to strive and achieve the maximum possible success, in order to be worthy of the trust of the board of directors

“It’s an immense responsibility that I’m very keen to take on,” said the retired Kenyan international. “ I’m looking forward to bringing the best ever I can, given my Rugby World Cup experience as a player and Olympian that gives me a great push forward.”

The UAE team has been on an upward surge of form since winning their maiden West Asian tournament in Doha in October 2021.
