Cristiano Ronaldo’s emphatic finish rescued a point for Manchester United as they held Chelsea on Thursday night despite being dominated for large portions of the game at Old Trafford. Manchester united were completely out-played by Chelsea at Old Trafford. Chelsea were dominant, far superior with Reece James simply outstanding.
Kai Havertz missed three first half chances. Twice the German was denied by united goalkeeper David de Gea. Once when Kante played him clear and again when a James cross landed on his head. There was another opportunity for Havertz, too, as a sweeping Chelsea counter released him down the right and he slashed a shot in to the side netting.
Marcos Alonso’s brilliant volley had put a dominant visiting side ahead on the hour mark, but an instant response from United’s talisman helped them avoid another defeat at home. Ronaldo struck from inside the box at a tight angle to get his 23rd goal of the season.
Manchester united would have to win all of their fixtures to stand any chance to play champions league next season but with the Gunners and Tottenham Hotspur both having two games in hand over them, it leaves United’s chances looking minimal. The draw with Chelsea leaves them five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with just three games remaining of the 2021/22 campaign.
