Didier Drogba lost a controversial bid to become president of the Ivory Coast Football Federation when he was eliminated after the first round of voting at Saturday’s elective congress.

Out of 131 total votes in the first round, Businessman Yacine Diallo has 59 votes, Sory Diabate has 50 votes while Didier Drogba has only 21 votes which are not enough to take him to the next round.

Drogba, who was recently inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame, had made known his ambition at a large gathering at the FIF headquarters in Abidjan, the country’s commercial capital, on August 1, 2020.

When Drogba first tried to run for office last year, his candidacy was questioned since he did not have the required backing from clubs and other interest groups, such as the players’ union and coaches’ association, whose nominations he needed to be on the ballot.

Drogba was hoping to follow in Samuel Etoo’s footsteps who is the President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).

Earlier last week, he was accused of pulling out of a Dwell tv debate with the opposite two candidates hours earlier than it was supposed to be aired on TV. The discourse went forward without him.
