On Monday, Kenya commemorated 59 years of freedom from British colonial authority. 12th December of every year marks the date when Kenya holds this kind of celebration.
William Ruto, Kenya’s fifth president, praised those who helped in the country’s liberation from British colonialism over 60 years ago as valiant guardians of its “sovereignty.” Speaking in Nairobi, Ruto said that the country has made great strides since gaining its freedom.
As we enter our sixth decade of independence, he declared, “we can proudly cite many achievements and impressive progress made through our own consistent efforts as evidence that our freedom struggle was neither an empty political adventure nor a reactionary born of idle resentment.”
“We gather as a nation to commune with our forefathers who were long suffering innocent victims of imperial plunder and colonial oppression, yet also heroic defenders of inalienable sovereignty and valiant fighters of our freedom,” he added.
According to Ruto, Kenya consistently participates in peacekeeping operations to maintain security and stability in Africa. He said that the government is pleased with Kenya’s steadfast leadership in promoting regional security, stability, cohesiveness, and peace.
He went ahead to add that this is through utilizing the country’s position as a regional anchor state for the benefit of our neighbors and area within multiple regional and continental frameworks and with the assistance of international partners.
